The cruises compared here
If you search for an evening boat tour in Berlin, this is the only product in the Civitatis catalogue that sails after 6 pm. That makes it the default choice for anyone who wants the river at night, which is a pity, because it is first of all a restaurant booking.
Below is what the listing promises, what it leaves out, and what to do if you want an evening on the Spree without committing to the meal.
1What you get for the money
The cruise lasts 2.5 hours, from 6:30 pm to 9 pm, with Reederei Becker. On boarding there is a welcome drink. Dinner is two courses and a dessert with one drink. The listing even names the dishes: a warm German potato salad with herbs and orange, a chicken fillet, and a surprise dessert with fresh fruit.
Commentary is recorded, in English and German. The listing names Berlin Cathedral, Museum Island, the Märkisches Museum and the Hanns Eisler music academy among the sights, so the boat does reach the historic centre.
2Where it leaves from, and why that matters
The meeting point is the Caprivi Bridge on Wintersteinstraße in Charlottenburg. By the coordinates in the listing that is more than 6 km west of Museum Island. From a hotel around Alexanderplatz or Friedrichstraße you need to cross the city before 6:30 pm, and again after 9 pm.
It also shapes the trip. A good part of the 2.5 hours is spent sailing to the centre and back. The listing describes the course as heading west through Kreuzberg, Mitte and Friedrichshain, which cannot be right for a boat starting in Charlottenburg, where the centre lies to the east. Treat the route description as approximate.
3The small print
The booking is non-refundable from the moment you pay. There is no 24-hour window as there is on the Alte Börse sightseeing boat.
You must book for at least two people. The only categories are adults and children under 3, so older children pay the adult price. The boat is listed as not wheelchair accessible.
The listing says nothing about the boat itself: no mention of an open deck, of window tables or of seating. The operator's website was not reachable when we checked, so we could not fill those gaps. Nor does the listing mention a vegetarian alternative to the chicken.
4The cheaper way to an evening on the river
Neither one-hour cruise is a true night cruise. The operator of the Alte Börse boat lists its last departure at 17:45, and Reederei Hadynski lists 5 pm in the main season and earlier in winter. In midsummer that is still full daylight. In spring and autumn the last sailings run into the early evening.
The practical plan is the last one-hour departure you can get, then dinner around Hackescher Markt, the station both operators name as closest to their piers. You pay from €22 for the boat and choose your own restaurant.
5Who should still book it
Book the dinner cruise if you are staying in Charlottenburg or the west, if the date is certain, and if a fixed menu suits everyone in the party. Two and a half hours at a table while the city passes is a fair evening when you do not have to travel far for it.
Do not book it as your one boat trip in Berlin. The sightseeing content is thinner than on the daytime cruises, the commentary is a recording and the reviews are lukewarm.
