Cruises in Stockholm side by side

For most visitors the right Stockholm boat tour is the two-hour archipelago ride from Skeppsbron, below the Royal Palace. It costs from €35, has a live English-speaking guide and is by far the most reviewed boat trip in the catalogue. If two hours is too long, the one-hour Royal Canal ride around Djurgården costs from €18 and leaves from the same quay.

Three other boats are worth knowing about: a 2 hour 15 minute trip under twelve bridges, a hop-on hop-off boat with eight stops and a two-hour cruise with a pizza. We compared the Civitatis listings with what the operators publish. On several points the two disagree, and nobody describes the boats in much detail, so we say so where it matters.

  • Free cancellation up to 24 h before

Who it suitsVisitors with a spare hour who want to see Djurgården, the Vasa Museum and Gröna Lund from the water for the lowest price here. It is also the easiest to fit around a museum day because it has two boarding points.

Pick something else ifSkip it if you want to see the islands beyond the city: this loop stays around Djurgården, and the archipelago ride from €35 is the one that heads out. The listing says it is not wheelchair accessible.

Boarding, commentary, what is included
Boarding point
Skeppsbrokajen (Gustav III) / Nybroviken (Berzelii Park). Two boarding points, and you can use either on the day: the pier at Skeppsbron next to the Gustav III monument, where the listing names Red Sightseeing Stockholm at Skeppsbrokajen, or the pier at Nybroviken beside Berzelii Park. The listing asks you to arrive at least 20 minutes early; the operator's own page says check-in is 5 minutes before departure.
Open or covered
Neither the listing nor the operator describes the boat: no word on outdoor seats, a roof or heating. The operator mentions a cafe on board selling coffee, pastries and soft drinks, and free Wi-Fi.
Commentary
Audio guide. The listing says it is in English; the operator says the audio guide comes in multiple languages without listing them. Count on English only.
Included
  • Boat ride along the Royal Canal of Djurgården
  • Audio guide in English
Not included
  • Food and drinks from the cafe on board
Cancellation
Free cancellation up to 24 hours before the start. After that, or if you do not show up, there is no refund.

Stockholm bridges boat trip

A 2 hour 15 minute round trip under twelve bridges, past Södermalm, the Essingen islands and Hammarby Sjöstad.

from €34.10

7.8/10 from 68 reviews on Civitatis

  • 2 h 15 min
  • Covered with open deck
  • No food
  • Strömkajen, Södra Blasieholmshamnen 11
  • Non-refundable

Who it suitsPeople who have already seen the harbour side and want the other half of the city: the south shore of Södermalm, the Essingeleden bridges and the newer districts. It is the longest sightseeing trip here that stays inside the city.

Pick something else ifSkip it if your plans or the forecast might change, because you cannot cancel. The Royal Canal ride from €18 and the archipelago ride from €35 both refund up to 24 hours before. The listing says it is not wheelchair accessible.

Boarding, commentary, what is included
Boarding point
Strömkajen, Södra Blasieholmshamnen 11. Södra Blasieholmshamnen 11, at the Strömkajen quay in front of the Grand Hôtel. The Civitatis voucher is not your ticket: the local team emails a QR code after booking, and that is what gets you on board. Be at the quay at least 15 minutes early. Open pier on the map
Open or covered
The listing mentions a cafe on board and nothing else about the boat. Pier, duration and route match the bridges tour that Stromma runs from Strömkajen, though the listing does not name the operator. Stromma says most of its boats have a limited number of seats outside at the stern, so expect to sit indoors for most of the trip.
Commentary
The listing includes an audio guide in English. Stromma's page for its matching tour describes it as guided in English. Either way, English is the only language you can rely on.
Included
  • Boat trip in Stockholm
  • Audio guide in English
Not included
  • Refreshments at the boat's cafe
Cancellation
Non-refundable. Once booked, the listing gives no refund for cancellations or changes.

Stockholm archipelago boat ride (2 hours)

A two-hour guided round trip from Skeppsbron past Djurgården and out to the first islands of the archipelago around Fjäderholmarna.

from €35

7.8/10 from 451 reviews on Civitatis

  • 2 h
  • Not stated
  • No food
  • Strand Rederi AB, Skeppsbrokajen Kajplats 104
  • Free cancellation up to 24 h before

Who it suitsAnyone who wants one boat trip in Stockholm and has two hours for it. It is the only sightseeing boat here with a live guide, and with 451 reviews it has several times the feedback of any other.

Pick something else ifSkip it if you expect to step ashore on an island: neither source mentions a stop, and two hours only reaches the nearest islands. If an hour on the water is enough, take the Royal Canal ride from €18. The listing and the operator both say the boat is not wheelchair accessible.

Boarding, commentary, what is included
Boarding point
Strand Rederi AB, Skeppsbrokajen Kajplats 104. The listing sends you to the Strand Rederi AB boat tour agency at Skeppsbrokajen Kajplats 104, on the quay below the Royal Palace, and links a map pin on the voucher. Arrive at least 20 minutes before the start. The listing recommends clothing that suits the weather. Open pier on the map
Open or covered
Nobody says which boat you get. The listing mentions a bar on board and Red Sightseeing, which sells a matching two-hour tour from the same quay, adds nothing about decks or seating. The advice to dress for the weather suggests there is somewhere to stand outside, but that is not stated.
Commentary
Live commentary from an English-speaking guide, covering the Royal Palace, the royal family and the islands you pass. English is the only language offered.
Included
  • Boat ride
  • English-speaking guide
Not included
  • Drinks from the bar on board
Cancellation
Free cancellation up to 24 hours before the start. After that, or if you do not show up, there is no refund.

Stockholm hop-on hop-off boat

A 24 or 72-hour pass for the boat that loops between eight stops in about an hour, from the Royal Palace to Slussen.

from €20

7.6/10 from 119 reviews on Civitatis

  • 1 h
  • Not stated
  • No food
  • Any of the 8 stops (stop 1 is the Royal Palace)
  • Free cancellation up to 24 h before

Who it suitsTravellers planning a day on Djurgården and Skeppsholmen who would rather arrive at the Vasa Museum, ABBA The Museum or Fotografiska by boat. The pass counts from first use, so 24 hours can cover an afternoon and the following morning.

Pick something else ifSkip it if you just want a ride with commentary: the Royal Canal loop costs less, from €18, and does that job. With one boat an hour and the last departure at 4 pm, the pass is also poor value late in the day.

Boarding, commentary, what is included
Boarding point
Any of the 8 stops (stop 1 is the Royal Palace). Board at any of the eight stops: Royal Palace, Nybroplan, Vasa Museum, Skeppsholmen, Gröna Lund and ABBA The Museum, the cruise berth S167, Fotografiska and Slussen. The listing asks you to print the voucher and show it to staff at the pier. Boats leave the Royal Palace pier every hour from 10 am, with the last one at 4 pm. The cruise berth stop does not operate in winter.
Open or covered
Neither the listing nor Red Sightseeing describes the boat. The operator mentions a small cafe on board and free Wi-Fi. The listing counts a snack as included, while the operator talks about a cafe where you buy things, so do not plan lunch around it.
Commentary
Recorded audio commentary. The listing says English; the operator advertises audio in 14 languages. Single-use headphones are handed out, and the listing suggests bringing your own.
Included
  • Ticket valid for 24 or 72 hours
  • Unlimited rides while the ticket is valid
  • English-language audio commentary
  • Snack
  • Wi-Fi on board
Not included
  • Entry to museums and attractions
  • Food and drinks beyond the snack

  • Red Sightseeing, Skeppsbrokajen (Gustav III)
  • Free cancellation up to 24 h before

Who it suitsCouples and groups of friends who want an informal meal on the water without dinner-cruise prices. From €29.50 it costs less than the guided archipelago ride and sails as far as the same first islands.

Pick something else ifSkip it with young children: the minimum age is 10. If you want to learn what you are looking at, choose the archipelago ride from €35, which has a live guide. With 48 reviews it is also the least tested boat here.

Boarding, commentary, what is included
Boarding point
Red Sightseeing, Skeppsbrokajen (Gustav III). Go to the red Tours & Tickets booth of RED Sightseeing on the waterfront near the statue of Gustav III, at Skeppsbrokajen, 15 minutes before the time on your voucher. The listing asks you to be punctual. Open pier on the map

Neither source describes the boat. The operator says the bar stays open for the whole cruise and that dogs are not allowed indoors, so there is at least an indoor saloon. Outdoor seating is not mentioned.
