Istanbul's boat piers cause more missed cruises than they should. The waterfront between Karaköy and Dolmabahçe is a long row of ferry landings, sea bus terminals and private jetties, and tour vouchers tend to give a café or a boat name as the landmark.

Below is where each cruise actually meets, taken from the Civitatis vouchers and, for the two Velena Travel cruises, from the operator's website.

1Kabataş: four cruises, four meeting points

Kabataş is the end of the T1 tram line and the lower station of the F1 funicular from Taksim, which is why so many tour boats use it. All four meeting points below are on or just off Meclis-i Mebusan Caddesi, the main road along the water.

Daytime yacht cruise: in front of Dolmabahçe Mosque, at number 34. The guide holds a Velena Travel sign. Sunset yacht cruise: Beltur Kafe, at the İDO Kabataş sea bus terminal, with a VELENA TRAVEL sign. Same operator, different spot, so do not assume one from the other.

Dinner and show cruise: the Boğazdayız pier at the Kabataş ferry landing; look for the boat named Tosun Paşa. Black Sea lunch cruise: the Kabataş ferry pier on İskele Yolu, boat name Senremoni, with exact directions sent by the supplier after booking. The Black Sea voucher asks for 10 minutes' margin; the other three ask for 15.

2Old town start, Eminönü finish

The Golden Horn and Bosphorus cruise does not start at a pier at all. You meet in front of the Pasión Turca shop at Çatalçeşme Sokak 29 in the Alemdar neighbourhood of Fatih, 15 minutes before the start, and the guide walks the group to the boat after a short guided stroll.

It ends at the Eminönü Kadıköy pier. The voucher warns that the landing place can change with sea conditions and dock availability, so do not arrange to meet someone at the pier or book a tight connection afterwards.

The listing never names the boarding pier. That is fine in practice, since you follow the guide, but it means you cannot join late at the water.

3Hotel pickup: who really gets it

Only the private yacht includes pickup and drop-off for every booking; the supplier comes to your Istanbul hotel by car or minibus and the listing gives no pier at all.

The sunset yacht is the confusing one. Its listing is tagged 'hotel pickup', but the voucher gives the Beltur Kafe meeting point. The operator's site says transfers are for eligible reservations from selected central hotels in Fatih and Beyoğlu and that guests outside the service area make their own way to Kabataş. If pickup decides the booking for you, get it confirmed in writing first.

The other four listings have no pickup. Plan to reach the meeting point on your own.

4What about Karaköy?

Karaköy is the next stretch of waterfront towards the Galata Bridge, and none of the six cruises in our comparison boards there. If a voucher or a street seller points you to Karaköy for one of these cruises, re-read the voucher.

5What goes wrong

The most common slip is going to the wrong Kabataş landmark. The mosque, the İDO terminal and the ferry landing are close together but not in sight of one another, and with 15 minutes in hand there is little room to recover. Open the Google Maps link in the voucher before you leave the hotel; the sunset and dinner vouchers both include one.

The dinner cruise needs a second document, a QR code from Cosmic Tickets that arrives from 6 pm the day before. Check your email, including spam, before you set off. The sunset cruise will not wait for latecomers, by the operator's own statement.

None of the listings mentions luggage storage or bag limits. If you are coming straight from a station or the airport with suitcases, ask the supplier first.

Quick questions

Where do Bosphorus cruises leave from?

Most of the ones we compared leave from the Kabataş waterfront in Beyoğlu, each from its own meeting point. One meets at a shop in the old town (Fatih) and ends at Eminönü, and the private yacht picks you up at your hotel.

How do I get to Kabataş pier?

Kabataş is the terminus of the T1 tram, which runs through Sultanahmet, and the bottom station of the F1 funicular from Taksim. From there the meeting points are a short walk along the waterfront road.

How early should I arrive for a Bosphorus cruise?

The vouchers ask for 15 minutes before the start, or 10 for the Black Sea cruise. Give yourself more on a first visit, because finding the right landmark takes time.

Is hotel pickup included on Bosphorus cruises?

Always on the private yacht, and for some central hotels in Fatih and Beyoğlu on the sunset yacht if the operator confirms it. The other cruises have no pickup.
