The cruises compared here
This is an unusually clean comparison. Both cruises are operated by Velena Travel, both last 2.5 hours, both leave from the Kabataş waterfront and both use what the operator describes as a 25-metre yacht with open decks and an indoor area. The catalogue scores are identical at 9.4.
What changes is the time of day, the price, what you are served, and a few practical details that are easy to miss.
1What you see
The daytime listing describes a first hour along the European shore past the Galata Tower, Dolmabahçe Palace, Ortaköy Mosque and the Rumelihisarı fortress, then a crossing under one of the bridges to the Asian side. In daylight you can pick out the wooden waterfront mansions the listing mentions.
The sunset listing names fewer landmarks: the Maiden's Tower, the Bosphorus Bridge and Ortaköy Mosque. Its selling point is the changing colour of the sky and the skyline. The operator sails about an hour before the official sunset, so part of the trip is in daylight and the end is at dusk.
2The stop on the Asian side
Only the daytime cruise lets you off the boat. The Civitatis listing says the yacht stops at Kanlıca for 20 minutes and recommends trying the local yoghurt. The operator's own page for its morning cruise describes a stop of about 30 minutes at Beylerbeyi instead.
We cannot tell you which of the two applies on your date. The listing itself says the route can vary with season and weather. Either way, you set foot in Asia on the day cruise and stay on board on the sunset one.
3Food, drink and price
Daytime: coffee, tea, fruit and Turkish sweets, from €28. Sunset: a cup of sharbat, a sweet chilled fruit or flower drink, and Turkish canapés, from €40. The operator mentions a cash bar on the sunset yacht.
Neither is a meal. The €12 difference pays for the hour of the day and nothing else on the list.
4Getting on board
The two cruises use different meeting points a few minutes apart. The day cruise meets in front of Dolmabahçe Mosque. The sunset cruise meets at Beltur Kafe at the İDO sea bus terminal. Both ask you to arrive 15 minutes early and both guides carry a Velena Travel sign.
The sunset listing is tagged 'hotel pickup', yet its voucher gives a meeting point. The operator explains the gap: transfers are available for eligible bookings from selected central hotels in Fatih and Beyoğlu and should be confirmed in advance. The operator also states that shared departures are not held for late arrivals, which matters more at sunset because the timing cannot slip.
5Access and weather
The catalogue marks the daytime cruise as accessible for folding wheelchairs with accessible toilets, and the sunset cruise as not wheelchair accessible. The operator says some of its boats are suitable and asks you to get in touch first.
The daytime listing warns that heavy fog can suspend the cruise, with a new date offered. Both have an indoor area for cold or wet days, and both can be cancelled free of charge up to 24 hours ahead.
