Stockholm's sightseeing boats leave from three quays that face each other across the same stretch of water. They are close together, which is exactly why people end up on the wrong one with five minutes to spare.

Check two things on your voucher before you leave the hotel: the name of the quay and whether the voucher itself is the ticket. For one of these boats it is not.

1Skeppsbron: the Gustav III statue

Skeppsbron is the waterfront on the east side of Gamla Stan, directly below the Royal Palace. The landmark is the statue of Gustav III. Red Sightseeing has a red Tours & Tickets booth by the water here, and the operator calls the spot Logårdstrappan.

This is where the pizza cruise checks in, where the Royal Canal ride has its first pier, and where the hop-on hop-off boat has its Royal Palace stop, the one the timetable is counted from.

The archipelago ride leaves from the same quay but its listing gives a different reference: the Strand Rederi AB agency at Skeppsbrokajen Kajplats 104. The map points in the two listings are roughly 150 metres apart. Use the map link on your voucher and look for the berth number instead of assuming every boat leaves from the statue.

2Nybroplan and Nybroviken: beside Berzelii Park

Nybroviken is the small bay at the edge of Östermalm, with Berzelii Park on its shore. The Royal Canal listing gives this as its second boarding point, and the hop-on hop-off boat lists Nybroplan as one of its eight stops.

One thing to ask the crew if you board the Royal Canal ride here. The listing says the boat returns to the original pier, while the operator's page says the tour always ends near the Royal Palace. If you need to be back at Nybroplan, confirm it before you sit down.

3Strömkajen: in front of the Grand Hôtel

The bridges trip boards at Södra Blasieholmshamnen 11, on the Strömkajen quay opposite the Royal Palace, in front of the Grand Hôtel. It is across the water from Skeppsbron, so going to the wrong one costs you a walk around by the bridge.

This is the boat where the Civitatis voucher is not valid for boarding. After you book, the local team emails a QR code, and that is what the crew scans. Check your inbox and spam folder the day before. The listing is non-refundable, so a missed boat is money lost.

4How early to arrive

The listings ask for at least 20 minutes for the Royal Canal ride and the archipelago ride, and at least 15 minutes for the bridges trip and the pizza cruise. Red Sightseeing's own pages are more relaxed, with check-in 5 to 15 minutes before depending on the tour. Follow the listing, since that is the ticket you hold.

The hop-on hop-off boat has no booked time. What matters there is the clock: one boat an hour from the Royal Palace between 10 am and 4 pm. Arrive at a stop a few minutes after a boat has left and you wait for the next.

5What goes wrong

The common mistakes are mixing up Skeppsbron and Strömkajen, waiting at the statue for a boat that leaves from berth 104 further along, and turning up for the bridges trip with only the Civitatis voucher. The hop-on hop-off listing asks for a printed voucher, which catches out people who expected to show a phone.

None of the five listings is tagged wheelchair accessible. The pizza cruise does not take children under 10. And none of these boats leaves from Stadshusbron by the City Hall, so ignore older advice that sends you there for these tickets.

Quick questions

Where do boat tours in Stockholm leave from?

Most of the boats we compare leave from Skeppsbron, below the Royal Palace in Gamla Stan. The bridges trip leaves from Strömkajen in front of the Grand Hôtel, and Nybroplan is a second boarding point for the Royal Canal ride and the hop-on hop-off boat.

Is the Civitatis voucher enough to board?

For four of the five boats, yes, and the hop-on hop-off listing asks for it printed. For the bridges trip you need the QR code that the local team emails after booking.

How early should I be at the pier?

At least 20 minutes for the Royal Canal and archipelago rides, and at least 15 minutes for the bridges trip and the pizza cruise, according to the listings.

Which metro station is closest to the piers?

Neither the listings nor the operator pages we checked name a metro station. Skeppsbron is on the Gamla Stan waterfront and Strömkajen is in front of the Grand Hôtel, so navigate to those landmarks.
