Prague river cruise: big boat or small historic boat?

The cruises compared here

Two one-hour cruises leave from piers that sit side by side under Štefánik Bridge. One is Classic River at Pier 17, a large modern boat run by Premiant City Tour. The other is a boat built in 1927 at Pier 16, run by River Boats Prague. They cost €18 and €21.

With a €3 gap and almost the same route, the choice comes down to the boat itself and a few lines of small print. Those lines matter more than they look.

1Size and atmosphere

Classic River has an open upper deck and an enclosed saloon with heating and air conditioning, plus a bar. It is built to carry a lot of people, and with more than 3,000 reviews on Civitatis it clearly does.

The 1927 boat is listed by Prague's tourist board as the Maria Croon, with a capacity of 105 and both open and covered deck areas. Fewer passengers means less competition for a rail-side spot. Your coffee or tea and a Czech dessert are part of the ticket, so nobody needs to stand at a bar.

2Ratings and price

The small boat scores 8.0 from 391 reviews. The big boat scores 7.4 from 3,035. A 0.6 gap on a ten-point scale is meaningful when the route is the same, and it favours the boat that costs slightly more.

Once you count the included drink and dessert, the vintage boat is arguably the cheaper of the two for anyone who would have bought a coffee on board anyway.

3Access and languages

Here the big boat wins clearly. Civitatis lists it as wheelchair accessible if you state it in the reservation, with accessible toilets. Read the operator's wording too: wheelchairs and pushchairs must be foldable, and passengers need to manage the stairs alone or with help from staff. The vintage boat is listed as not wheelchair accessible at all.

For commentary, the vintage boat offers an English audio guide through QR codes. The big boat's operator offers its audio guide in 24 languages, including Spanish, Portuguese, French, Italian and German. On both you listen on your own phone with your own headphones.

4Refunds and planning

The big boat can be cancelled free of charge up to 24 hours before. The vintage boat needs 3 days for a full refund and gives back half between 3 days and 24 hours. If you are watching the weather forecast before committing, that difference is decisive.

The big boat's operator lists daily sailings at 12:00, 13:00, 15:00, 16:00 and 17:00 at the time we checked. The vintage boat's local team may phone to reconfirm, so give a number that works abroad.

5What about the Devil's Channel?

Many people searching for a small boat in Prague mean the low wooden boats that slip into Čertovka, the narrow canal beside Kampa. None of the four cruises we compare describes that canal in its route. The 1927 boat is small compared with Classic River, but it is still a river boat on the main channel.

If the canal is your priority, check the route text of whatever you book for the word Čertovka or Devil's Channel before paying.
