The cruise to check first
Porto's boats are spread over four boarding points on two banks. The mistake people make most often is assuming every cruise leaves from the quay under the Dom Luís I bridge.
None of the operators we checked names a metro or bus stop on its cruise page, so we do not either. What follows is what the vouchers and operator sites state about each pier.
1Ribeira side: Cais da Ribeira and Cais da Estiva
The daytime six bridges cruise and its sunset version with aperitif both use these two piers, which the voucher describes as very close to Praça da Ribeira. The operator is Tomaz do Douro. Its boats fly white and blue flags.
You cannot walk straight on with a phone voucher. Go to the Tomaz do Douro ticket office at either pier, show the Civitatis voucher and collect a paper ticket. On a busy afternoon that is one queue for the ticket and another for the boat, so do not arrive two minutes before you hoped to sail.
The dinner cruise also leaves from the Ribeira dock, at 8 pm, and asks you to be there 15 minutes early. Its voucher does not name the exact pier. Ask at the same ticket office if nothing on the quay is signed.
2Gaia side: Cais de Gaia on Avenida de Diogo Leite
The Gaia six bridges cruise is run by Rota do Douro and boards in front of number 74 on Avenida de Diogo Leite, on the Gaia waterfront. The voucher says staff stand on the dock with an umbrella bearing the company name.
Two rules are stricter here. The ticket must be printed, and a departure needs a minimum number of passengers. If yours does not fill, you are moved to the next available slot. Boats run from 10 am, with a lunchtime gap according to the listing, and the last departure is around 6 pm in high season and 4 pm in the low season.
3Ribeira or Gaia: does the side matter?
Not for the views. Both cruises cover the same six bridges and return to where they started. Pick the bank you will already be on.
If you are sightseeing in the old town, board at Ribeira. If you have a port lodge visit booked in Gaia, board there. The two piers face each other across the river, so switching sides means walking over the Dom Luís I bridge.
Because two companies sell the same cruise from facing quays, look-alike mix-ups are easy. A Tomaz do Douro voucher is not valid on a Rota do Douro boat, or the other way round. Match the name on your voucher to the name on the boat before you queue.
4Douro Marina, Afurada: the sunset catamaran
BBDouro boards at dock D of Douro Marina, on Rua da Praia in Afurada, Vila Nova de Gaia. The voucher calls it the last dock on the left. This is on the Gaia bank near the river mouth, roughly 3 km downstream of the Ribeira piers, so it is not a stroll from the centre.
Arrive 15 minutes early and wait for a skipper to register you. The operator says parking is available at the marina. Dress for wind: the voucher recommends comfortable clothes and a warm jacket.
5Marina do Freixo: the private yacht
The private yacht leaves from the Atalaia Gold Pier in Marina do Freixo, on the Porto bank at the eastern end of the city, beyond the last of the six bridges. Be there at least 10 minutes before your time.
The booking confirmation carries a map link to the exact pontoon. Use it, because the listing gives no street address.
