The cruise to check first
The Pest embankment between the Chain Bridge and Elisabeth Bridge is lined with floating piers, and each has a number. Several companies sell similar one-hour cruises from neighbouring docks, often with staff selling tickets on the quay. A voucher for one company's boat is not valid on another's.
There is a second trap. The dinner cruise leaves from a pier called Akadémia Dock 2, which belongs to a different stretch of quay north of the Chain Bridge. It is not five docks along from Dock 7.
1Dock 7: Legenda day and evening cruises
The address is Dock 7, Jane Haining rakpart. The listing and the operator give the same directions: from Vigadó tér walk down the stairs, cross at the traffic lights, turn left and walk about 50 metres to the pier with Legenda signs. The evening listing adds that the dock is beneath the Marriott Hotel.
Public transport is stated clearly: metro to Vörösmarty tér on the yellow line, or tram 2 to Vigadó tér. Arrive at least 15 minutes before the evening cruise and 15 to 20 minutes before the daytime one. The operator's FAQ notes a few paid parking spaces on the quay.
One oddity: the evening cruise description says the pier is near Petőfi Bridge. That bridge is far to the south. The voucher instructions and Legenda's site both say Dock 7 at Vigadó tér, and that is where to go.
2Dock 11: Silverline one-hour cruise
The address on the voucher is Jane Haining rakpart, Dock 11, 1052 Budapest. It is the same quay as Legenda, further south. Silverline describes the spot as under Elisabeth Bridge. Neither the listing nor the operator names a metro or tram stop, so navigate to the address or use the map link on your voucher.
The listing asks you to be there 10 minutes before departure, but that is a minimum. Seating is first come, first served and some seats have limited views. On its own site the operator tells upper-deck ticket holders to arrive 15 minutes early.
Before you leave the hotel, download the audio guide app, charge your phone and pack earphones. The operator also sells tickets at the dock and through salespeople on the quay, so make sure the boat you queue for is the one named on your voucher.
3Akadémia Dock 2: dinner cruise
The dinner cruise boards the Gróf Széchenyi at Akadémia Dock 2, Id. Antall József rakpart. The listing describes it as the second pier north of the Chain Bridge on the Pest side, on the promenade towards the Parliament. The ship's name is the surest landmark, since the operator calls it the only two-deck paddle wheeler working in Budapest.
Be at the ship at least 20 minutes before the 7 pm departure given in the listing. No metro or tram stop is stated by either source.
4What goes wrong
Wrong dock, right number. Dock 7 and Dock 11 are on the same road and both sell hour-long cruises. Read the operator name on the voucher, then look for that name on the pier.
Late arrival. All four listings treat a no-show as non-refundable. Boats on a fixed timetable do not wait, and the quay road has to be crossed at the lights, which takes longer than it looks from the square above.
Accessibility surprises. The Legenda listings say only some areas are accessible, with accessible toilets. The Silverline and dinner cruises are listed as not wheelchair accessible. If step-free boarding matters, contact the operator before paying.
Dogs. The two Legenda listings are tagged pet-friendly. Silverline's site says dogs are not permitted apart from service animals.
