The cruises compared here
The day and evening cruises in Amsterdam cover much of the same water. What changes is what you can see, what is served, how long you are on board and how much you pay. Evening products in the catalogue start at nearly double the price of the daytime hour.
There is also a seasonal catch that listings rarely explain. "Night cruise" means different things in June and in December.
1What a daytime cruise is good for
Daylight is when the architecture is readable. The listing for the one-hour Lovers cruise names the House with the Heads on the Keizersgracht, with its six carved Roman deities, and the Anne Frank House and Houseboat Museum on the Prinsengracht. Details like carved faces on a facade are for daylight.
Daytime is also when you have the most choice. The Lovers cruise leaves from three docks and, according to the operator, runs daily between 09:00 and 21:00. The small open boat with a live guide is a daytime-friendly product too, because sitting outside is more pleasant when it is warm and bright.
2What changes after dark
The evening listings sell the lit bridges and the city by night. The cheese and wine cruise lasts 90 minutes, half an hour longer than the daytime loop, and its listed route is wider: it mentions Leidseplein, the Rijksmuseum, Vondelpark and the Maritime Museum among the sights. The dinner cruise lasts two hours.
You lose two things. Neither evening listing mentions a commentary, so you will learn less. And both cruises seat you at tables of up to six which, the operator says, you may share with other guests.
3The summer problem with night cruises
The cheese and wine listing says that in the summer months you get the chance of a sunset during the cruise, and the dinner listing says the same, depending on the time of year. Read that carefully. It means that in high summer a good part of an evening cruise happens before dark.
When checked in October 2026, the operator's site showed the wine and cheese cruise leaving at 8 pm on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays and the dinner cruise at 7 pm on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Check the times offered on your date. If lit-up canals are the reason you are booking, a late spring or summer trip is the weakest time for them and autumn or winter the strongest.
4Winter: the Light Festival boat
From 26 November 2026 to 17 January 2027 there is a fourth evening option, the Amsterdam Light Festival cruise from €25. It sails for about 75 minutes past the festival's light artworks on a heated boat, with an audio guide in English and Dutch.
It is the lowest-scored cruise in this comparison at 6.0 from 165 reviews. The operator itself warns of waiting even with a time slot and says the trip can take up to 105 minutes or more in water traffic. Go for the artworks, with patience, or choose the cheese and wine cruise for a calmer evening.
5If you can only do one
First visit and one slot free: take the daytime hour. It is the cheapest, it has commentary, and it shows you the canal ring you will then recognise on foot.
Second visit, or a trip built around evenings: take the cheese and wine cruise. At 8.8 from 913 reviews it is the best-rated option with a meaningful number of reviews, and it costs less than half the dinner cruise.
